Social and Emotional Learning
SEL or Social and Emotional Learning has become an indispensable tool in the education system given that the focus on EQ or Emotional quotient is gaining more importance as IQ. This is together with the goal to develop the needed emotional maturity and social skills in students. Through SEL, students are empowered to have decision making skills, positive attitude and problem solving skills, social awareness, relationship skills, leadership skills, empathy, life skills and effective listening skills.
There are many different schools and other educational institutions that impart SEL programs via formative evaluation. This kind of assessment is enabling teachers to personalize their lessons to fit student’s requirements and at the same time, help them to grow as responsible and mature adults. As a matter of fact, giving feedback to educators aren’t the sole focus of formative assessment as students receive feedback too regarding their learning progress. Using formative assessment, the instructors are able to notice the gap between the current performance and desired performance of their students. Through this, it lets them to integrate the proper measures to overcome any challenges.
SEL practitioners help in developing the requisite skills in educational students and students of all backgrounds through easing of the applications, training and forming of such skills in the student’s every day life. It’s been discovered that social and emotional learning programs are increasing academic achievement, self-esteem, social and emotional skills and even classroom behavior in students. This at the same time decreases their odds of getting bullied, indulge in antisocial activities, use drugs and use aggression.
There is a chart followed in SEL programs to see formative assessment; with this chart, it helps in determining the progress and pace of learning that the student has by checking it from high to low level SEL skills. Progress levels portrayed in chart meet the set standards of formative assessment. The chart in addition is rendering the definite objective of it that can be implemented on higher level. With this chart, the students can keep track of their learning progress while in the program.
Aside from that, the chart functions as guide to students in taking the following steps to rise up in levels in SEL progression chart. As a matter of fact, there are 4 different levels used for social and emotional learning progression chart and these include Score 4, Score 3, Score 2 and Score 1. Again, there’s Score zero as well or the level to which the students don’t have any clue of the situation and attaining little proficiency in following the scores aforementioned.
